I dunno, I found it rather rude to the poor people who were booted offstage before their speeches were over. I mean, why does she get more time over the others?
Still haven't seen the movie, though, my roommates got it coming next in hios Netflix.

I've never been a fan of the musical interuptions and time limits on speeches or understood why industry related award shows are meant to be entertaining and short. I always hate when people don't get a chance to speak--it kills me inside.
SO I was very happy for Marketa OBVIOUSLY. And why did she get a special exception? Because the story of how she ended up there is a lot more inspirational than a hollywood sound editor getting an award for working on another hollywood movie. It was a testiment that sometimes small and personal can be acknowledged by the corporate machine that is the oscars. To quote the Irish President: ...the success of 'Falling Slowly' showed that rich and original talent could still rise to the very top of the entertainment world irrespective of the size of the budget involved in a production.
While I 100% agree with your first point, I do you feel you are playing favorites with your second point. To say one award means more than another is crazy.
And personally, it kills me that every year the technical Oscars are presented at a separate award show and given a quick shout-out during the awards.
But maybe I'm just a huge geek.

You can't blame people for rooting for the little guy in a big pond. if anything I'm more biased because of my love for DIY, and indie filmmaking getting attention. I love Brad Bird and Pixar but I was PISSED that it beat Persepolis. I'm a fan of personal projects and personal stories. Am I biased because I am a fan of the artists who won? Yes! But I also LOVED Enchanted and though that the performance from August Rush was fantastic--I would have had no complaints if it won.
I completely feel for the people on the technical side of the industry. I agree they deserve more respect and attention. But I don't think that because one person gets redeemed on TV that it's a knock against the others who got slighted before her. If anything it calls attention to the others as well and maybe makes people realize how obnoxious interrupting speeches is as a whole.
Yayyy! I was gonna call you guys in case you weren't watching, but I figured if they were playing, you were already on it :) Thanks for the video link, I think it was one of the best moments of the night!
Ha ha, oh yes! Read Andy's latest post too, he's got a couple of cool links I'd missed, including an audio interview with Glen's mom! XD
I thought that was so cool. I don't know who had a hand in that, but I like to think Jon Stewart did, 'cause I already th ink he's pretty rad. ;)
Steve, if it makes you feel any better, they actually started the music early because they thought those two were done and it didn't seem as though she was stepping forward to the mike (as far as I could tell, anyway). Then they stopped the music, but she and Glen were already walking away. Then they started the music again. So it looked as though the people running things were feeling bad for cutting those two off prematurely. As opposed to cutting people off who are just running long. ;)
A well-deserved win :) Maybe the Oscars aren't total bullshit!
yeah! i actually thought of y'all when they won the oscar. i still haven't seen it, but i'm bumping it to the top of my Netflix queue after hearing their amazing Oscar night performance - that song is great!
It's riiiight up your alley, I think! :D
definitely my favorite win of the night, and easily two of the best acceptance speeches. plus i loved the story Jon told about the two of them backstage "Let's make them kiss!" "But they're both men!" "It's okay, we're in Hollywood!"
that was definitely my favorite moment last night!
That's awesome! I adored "Once" and I'm so glad they won. :D
Hey, thanks for that, Raina! I'm so clueless about music these days, they sound great. Which album would you recommend starting with?
Frames? *Cough*! ;) That's a sampler pack for ya. As far as Glen and Marketa's solo project, The Swell Season, the EP simply titled The Swell Season is absolultely amazing. It has a lot of the songs from "Once" on it, but stripped down and haunting. The soundtrack from "Once" is really astoundingly good too, but I might recommend seeing the film first so they have more impact!
Thanks so much! I'm having fun listening to the tracks right now while I'm working! :-)
I didn't see your post until I posted my own elated thanks as well! Woohoo! Go Glen, GO! :D
Oh!! I saw Once and it was soooo good! I went out the next day and bought the soundtrack (and have since bought the movie). When I found out they were nominated for an Oscar I was so excited and watched the awards just to see them perform. When they actually won I seriously jumped up and yelled and started clapping, I was so excited! Brock thought I was nuts, haha! That was awesome when they brought Marketa back onstage to give her speech. :D |
