I can finally, finally, FINALLY make it known to the world at large:


Scholastic/Graphix will be publishing the complete SMILE: A Dental Drama in 2010!

I've been sitting on this news for months, and stalling updates on the webcomic for even longer. In truth, I've been working very hard behind the scenes this whole while, writing the conclusion to the story, thinking about the book's format, and doing color tests.

...Yeah, that's right: it's going to be in full color!

The other piece of news to go along with this, is that I pretty much have to give up posting weekly updates to the strip online. The story's conclusion will only appear in the print version, which means there will be about 90 more pages than what is currently on my site. I'll also be expanding and revising the current pages, and of course, coloring them all. I may run a few other things on the site now and then; I recently got another great guest strip, and it seems like a good place to put teaser art! The site needs an overhaul anyway. I'll give a shout when that happens.

Anyway, now you know! I'm really excited and happy. Time to get to WORK. :)

I'm going to have my original SMILE minis I got in San Diego years ago CGC'ed and slabbed and put them on eBay when that comes out. That'll totally pay for my daughter's first year of college!

I've been joking about doing that with my first print copy of Take Out #1 for years.

Raina doesn't think it's that funny.

That's wonderful news. I remember talking with you and wondering why wouldn't Scholastic be interested in Smile? It seemed such a natural fit.
Apparently they thought so too but you weren't able to give away details. :) When people get to talking about making good comics for kids I picture Smile in the children's book section.

Wonderful! Will we be seeing it in the Scholastic catalogues, the ones my kids bring home from school every month, as well? I find that's a great way to get non-comic-reading parents to buy graphic novels for their kids.

YES! The BSC gns were dropped by Book Clubs after one volume, which sucked, as the other 3 books couldn't pick up momentum. But SMILE will be there, I'm happy to report!
