Disney's DTV Monster Hits [Oct. 15th, 2008|01:51 am]

I posted some of these links a couple of years ago but they all got taken down; lucky for me (and maybe you? Were you a kid in 1987?), somebody posted all of Disney's DTV Monster Hits on YouTube in 5 chunks:

Part 1
(Thriller, Ghostbusters)

Part 2
(Huey, Dewey, and Louie Trick or Treating; Bad Moon Rising; Monster Mash)

Part 3
(Somebody's Watching Me; The Great Mouse Detective [which had recently come out when this aired]; The Headless Horseman; Evil Queen Transformation sequence from Snow White)

Part 4
(Evil Woman; Donald Duck's Friday the 13th; Superstition; Snow White's would-be assassin; You Better Run; Sorcerer Mickey)

Part 5
(That Old Black Magic; Dreamtime; Heffalumps and Woozles; Sweet Dreams)

This is, like, my 10-year-old self in a nutshell. We taped it off TV and my sister and I watched it over and over and over, regardless of it being Halloween or not. The framing device is cheesy as heck, but the editing is really well done and I still get chills watching it. I consider myself a pretty huge Disney nerd, but as Dave and I have been going back and watching a ton of the original cartoons lately, I find myself remembering the DTV versions better than the real things, and sometimes more fondly. I am a product of the 80s, no doubt.

Anyway, THIS is Halloween to me.

Disney's Halloween Treat was always my Halloween! A few years back I bought a bootleg of A Disney Halloween that came with the DV stuff. Good times.

They sure don't make cartoons or music like they used to!

Did Disney Channel exist back then or was it just a special aired on normal TV? I'm praying this will be the first proper Halloween in Spain, we do get Halloween specials on TV now, but trick or treating isn't catching on, most of the kids don't know they have to dress up if they want candy and most people don't know they are supposed to give out candy at all! :(

Disney Channel was really new back then, but I believe this special aired on regular TV. Disney Channel would show single-song DTV bumpers in between cartoons sometimes, in lieu of commercials.

WOW. Thanks for this, I had totally forgotten about DTV. My sibs and I were also really into the Valentine's day one. I'm pretty sure that DTV is the reason I love The Eurythmics.

Wow, this brings back memories for me. 10-year-old me and my cousin were exactly the same. I just recently disposed of my video tape copy of DTV after finding that the tape's quality had deteriorated to "unwatchable", so thanks for posting this.

Yeah well thanks a lot. I was NOT ten years old in 1987, but did watch a fair amount of MTV when it was new, and it only took a mention of that Rockwell song to trigger it as today's earworm.

Awesome! My family also taped any holiday special off tv and we definitely had this one! Growing up without cable...the Disney videos WERE my MTV...

You know, me too! We *had* cable, but we only had one TV and it was in the middle of the one main room in our house, and my mom would get very uncomfortable when MTV was on. So I never watched it, until late high school!

Wow! You just made my day. Thanks for this. My kids are definitely products of the Pixar/Playhouse Disney generation but lately we've been trying to find some of the classic Disney stuff for them to watch. Whenever I watch the Disney Channel with them I fondly remember the DTV segments they used to show. I know they'll love this. (I love it.)
