X-Men: Misfits Cut Short [Apr. 12th, 2010|02:35 pm]
[Tags|, , ]

We are disappointed to confirm the reports that Del Rey Manga cancelled X-Men: Misfits volume 2. We just got word of this a few days ago, so we are still processing the news ourselves. We’d like to apologize to the book’s many fans, who were waiting eagerly for book 2 to drop. Even though sales for Book 1 were high (several weeks on the NYT Graphic Books Bestseller List) we were told they were not high enough to justify the expenses (specifically, the cost of licensing Marvel characters).

The saddest part for us is that the story was written as a 2-parter and we set a lot of things up to be played out or resolved in Book 2. We'd have done things VERY differently if we knew there was a chance of this happening. Less foreshadowing and more payoff! We certainly wouldn’t have waited until Book 2 to include Lockheed, that’s for sure!

And, because it was work for hire, and the characters are all licensed, there's no way the rest of the story will ever see the light of day. There is nothing we can do about it. We did the work and we got paid (for both books). Del Rey had to make cuts; we fell under the knife. End of story.

We have nothing but gratitude for everyone at Del Rey Manga (especially our editor, Tricia Pasternak) and Marvel Comics, all of whom showed us tremendous amounts of support and enthusiasm every step of the way. It was a dream gig, getting to work on an X-Men book and being encouraged to have fun, and do whatever silly things we could think of (including trying to make a good book!).

We’d also like to thank Anzu, who was half-way through penciling Book 2. She really got what we were going for and was always able to take it to the next level. Anzu was a fantastic partner on this wild ride and we hope that we get to collaborate again someday. And with any luck, she will at least be able to show off some of her character designs for the new additions to the cast in volume 2.

And of course, a final word of thanks to all the people who have vocally supported X-Men: Misfits. We knew there would be a lot of skepticism about the project from the beginning, so hearing from so many people who “got it” really made us happy. The cancellation is still sinking in and we certainly appreciate the people who have already shared their feelings with us. That’s publishing, though. Series are NOT sure things. The best way to support a series you love is to buy the books, and spread the word. In the meantime, we imagine we’ll continue to get tons of Google Alerts, letting us know about all the torrents and rapidshare files of X-Men: Misfits there are out there…

I caught wind of this on twitter last night. I'm so sad to hear this news... it really felt like things were on the up and up for the series. T___T;;;

Always sad news to hear fun projects being cut. Man, those licensing costs must be absolutely prohibitive if, despite good sales, the book is not bringing in enough.
Also sad to think that no one will ever get to read the end of your story.
I almost feel like screaming "why cut at #1? You will probably gather even more readers the more issues you have!"
Costs costs and more costs. Now books go under the same hatchet as television shows.

It makes one think: how many other companies will dare to try making similar collaboration work if licenses are so costly?

I'm sorry to hear this... It was the only manga I've read this year and I loved it... it's shame we can't see how it ends...

Aw man, I'm sorry to hear about this. I haven't read an X-Men book in quite some time until "Misfits" came out, and I really enjoyed it! Refreshing to see humor and fun injected back into a world that I'd long considered joyless. Now I'm super-bummed to not have the story conclude. Stupid licensing fees...

I hope (very much) that people who have taken the time to download the book on a torrent will take another moment to buy the book. For one thing they can go outside and read it in the park on a sunny day, and for another, that will help prevent more daring and beautiful projects like this from getting axed before they see completion.

Congratulations on your great effort on this book! It was an adventure to watch it unfold. :)

Aw, that sucks to hear! Wished they gave you guys the opportunity to finish the story.

Yeah, licensing well known brands can be cost prohibitive. When I was at Gamehouse, we licensed Milton Bradley games, thinking it was a good thing but turned out to be a nightmare (not just in terms of costs but dealing with the committee that oversees the development of the brands).

Aw, that's awful news. You don't know me or anything - but as a long-time X-Men nerd I found the first book totally delightful, and I'll be sad not to see the story come to it's conclusion. And even sadder that you won't have chance to see your story go out in the world.

I have no idea if that's an option or not. I imagine it would be a lot of work on Marvel's part to figure out how to make it happen. But I guess if book 1 continued to sell and there was a demand for it? I'm skeptic though.

Aw, jeez. Sending huge hugs your way. :(

If it's any consolation, I think you guys came come up with stuff that's way better than anything Marvel can do. Anything after this is going to be even MORE interesting and MORE amazing.

I guess it's hard to make money on manga style books where the art isn't already done and paid for. :(

Boo! I love that book, and did my best to make sure everyone I know bought it, but I know sometimes things just don't work out. You guys are so very professional about it, I'm sure if they decide to come back to it they'll let you wrap it up.

I'm so bummed I won't know what happens next though!
